Music From Muscle Shoals Then Now and Forever - June 2021

"In the House" at the Grinder House is broadcast live on WFMC Jams every Friday from 6-8pm central.

Jamie began playing guitar at the age of 13 and like his Grandfather soon was making music on stage. Jamie began playing a snare and hi hat in church along side Ray Thompson from Mobile Alabama and developed that itch that all musicians get! By the time he turned 19 Jamie was playing locally in Mobile at local clubs like Austin's Country Palace, The Wild Wild West, other venues around the south. It wasn't long Jamie was packing his bags and heading north to Nashville where he spent the next 19 years developing his style, his voice, and his writing skills. Jamie shared a stage with greats like Steve Cropper, Jerry Waddell, Blind Mississippi Morris, Mark Collie, Terry Lee Burns, and Steve Saunders. All these talented individuals shared their love for music with Jamie and helped him build a solid foundation that will carry him through the rest of his career. So, if you love music, real honest music, with heartfelt lyrics, just take a listen and you will hear the difference.
We welcome Jamie back to Grinder House every chance we get! Look for some future dates for a possible Saturday Smokin' on the Plateau series.

This week's episode features Trey Odum.  Listen to "Live From the Bird's Nest" on Thursdays at 8pm Central on WFMC Jams by clicking the "Listen Live" at the top of the page.

"The Georgia Songbirds - Live From the Bird's Nest" is a podcast aimed at local artists and songwriters, giving them a place to share music, stories and experiences as they chase their dream.

Trey OdumBorn and raised in the Deep South, country crossover singer/songwriter Trey Odum is the perfect combination of southern charm, a powerful voice and a unique songwriting philosophy. While Odum credits his current city, Phoenix, AZ, with re-sparking his love of country music and launching his career, he will always be a southern boy at heart. Throughout his career, he has been influenced by country greats such as Keith Urban, Eric Church, and Brooks and Dunn. However, rock has also been a strong musical inspiration for Trey, helping to shape his unique style. “One of the aspects I love most about country music is its flexibility. It is open to so many perspectives and is ever evolving and changing in different directions at the same time. I am constantly inspired by the country artists, but I want to find my own unique inspiration and stamp on music as well,” explains Trey. Trey was born in Dothan, Alabama and moved to Macon, Georgia at age 9 where he sang for the first time in his church choir. At age 16, Trey’s parents bought him his first guitar for Christmas. A multi-instrumentalist, Trey learned most of the instruments he plays by ear, having never formally taken lessons. "I believe that mostly teaching myself really has opened me up to a bigger world of instrumental possibilities, both in the studio and on stage." Trey and his band perform all across the Phoenix valley and surrounding areas, traveling across state lines and even the U.S. Border as long as there's a crowd to play to. In his spare time, Trey loves camping and spending time outside. He is an avid hunter and fisherman. However, his great passion in life is playing the guitar and writing music. “My songwriting style is very honest. I like to tell stories and write about what I know. It is not about always being happy or always being deep, it's just about being real.” In like fashion, Trey and his band have a reputation for turning a country show into a rock concert on any night. "We want to play music that speaks to us, and that both we and the crowd enjoy. That way, everyone has a great time. We always want to make sure everyone in the room feels like a part of the party." He is currently working on releasing his debut album.

Live from the Birds Nest

Brent Burns was born in Oklahoma, raised in Arizona and arrived in Gulf Shores, Alabama in 1972. This son of the desert has become the poet laureate of the beach. In 2006, Burns was named “Official Music Ambassador of the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau.” In 2008, Burns won three awards in the first ever Trop Rock Music Awards. Burns won “Entertainer of the Year,” “CD of the Year (for “Ragtops and Flip Flops”)” and a special WAVE award for his charitable work. 2010 brought more Trop Rock Music awards, CD and Song of the Year for “I’ve Got A Beach in My Backyard” and Songwriter of the Year. In 2011 he added two more awards - Songwriter of the Year and Entertainer of the Year! 2012 brought awards for CD and Song of the Year for "Don't Come Knockin' If The Tiki Hut's Rockin'."
Burns was all over the national scene with his songs and videos, “Pain At The Pump” and “Drill, Drill, Drill.” After the videos were posted on You Tube, CNN interviewed Burns and used “Pain At The Pump” in their special “4 Bucks! What’s Next? America’s Fuel Crisis.” When the BP oil spill struck his beloved Gulf Coast in April 2010, Burns took the oil giant to task with his song, “Drill, Drill, Drill.” The song and video were featured on CNN’s Headline News. Burns first tapped into the American public’s anger over rising fuel costs in response to the oil shortages of the 1970s and 80s. Burns wrote the hit song, “Cheaper Crude or No More Food.” The song sold 200,000 copies the day it was released and climbed the Billboard Charts after radio commentator Paul Harvey played it three times. It is the first and only song ever played in Harvey’s nearly 50 years of radio broadcasting.
Burns’ fame continued with appearances on Real People, The Mike Douglas Show, and Hee-Haw. Burns was featured on the front page of the Sunday New York Times Entertainment Section, as well as in articles appearing in the Chicago Tribune, LA Times, Arizona Republic, Newsweek, US Magazine, and Billboard Magazine. Besides his Top 40 hit, “Cheaper Crude or No More Food,” Burns has had five other nationally charted records.
A twice wounded, Purple Heart winning combat veteran, Burns also has the distinction of being the first American entertainer to perform for troops overseas after the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Burns’ musical career has taken him to Italy, Australia, Mexico and coast to coast in the US.
Burns’ philanthropic projects have continued throughout the years. A portion of his CD sales goes to charities including the American Cancer Society, Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, and Habitat for Humanity. Burns’ Habitat tribute song, “Build Them A House,” is available for free download on his web site, www.brentburns.com.
Brent’s impressive CD sales and songwriting skills continue to make him a highly sought after artist and performer. His schedule includes over 200 dates a year at corporate events, concerts, festivals and clubs.

Steevie Steeves and Jon Decious return to the Grinder House Stage for the ???th time. We love them so much that we've lost count...Great SHOW to kick off the Memorial Day weekend!!
Nashville, Tennessee-based indie-folk trio TOWNE consists of longtime singer/songwriter collaborators Steevie Steeves, Jon Decious and guitarist Luke Marshall. Like Steeves, who cut her teeth singing in Pittsburgh’s riverboat and cover band scene, Decious spent the years prior pursuing a career in songwriting, leaning on his poetically simple, “Kentucky talk”, style of writing to land songs on albums of up-and-coming roots and Americana artists such as; Caitlin Rose, Anderson East, and most recently, Lucette. Inspired by the likes of everyone from; Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris, Heart, The Killers, and the perfectly imperfect harmonies of Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty, the two set out as an acoustic duo for years. Eventually, landing slots on The Pilgrimage Festival, Master Musician’s Festival, 30AFest, performing alongside artists such as; Willie Nelson, Travis Meadows, and Eddie Vedder, among others. The pair released two EP’s: 2016’s Games We Play, and 2018’s Audacious (which included the single “Camouflage” that placed 2nd in the International Songwriting Competition), before meeting guitarist, Luke Marshall, while guest-speaking at a Kentucky 4-H music seminar. Marshall, along with his Johnny Marr-meets-Nels Cline-inspired playing, proved to be the missing link for the duo that had been forever in search of “that sound”.
