For six years, the May Day Music Fest has been more than a celebration of independent music. While the festival has become known for showcasing local and regional artists, its deeper purpose has always been to support organizations making a meaningful difference in the community.

This year, the 6th Annual May Day Music Fest has selected Community Unity 360 (CU360) as its charitable focus, helping raise awareness and funds for an ambitious project that is already changing lives throughout the Shoals region.

Community Unity 360 is transforming a piece of local history into something much greater: a sanctuary for veterans and a resource center designed to serve both military veterans and members of the surrounding community.

During a recent interview with at the facility located at the historic former Allsboro School near Cherokee, Alabama, Kaytland Gambles shared a vision that extends far beyond providing temporary shelter. Their goal is to create a welcoming environment where veterans can find stability, support, camaraderie, and practical resources without the stigma often associated with asking for help.

The organization describes the project as a safe haven where veterans can connect with other veterans, access assistance programs, receive guidance navigating benefits and services, and build meaningful relationships that continue long after they leave the facility.

One of the most unique aspects of the project is its emphasis on community and companionship. CU360 has begun partnering with local animal shelters to help pair veterans with trained companion dogs, known as “battle buddies,” providing both emotional support and a sense of purpose during difficult transitions.

The vision for the property also includes educational workshops, outdoor activities, community gatherings, support services, and opportunities for veterans to reconnect with civilian life while maintaining the camaraderie many miss after military service.

The need for programs like this is evident. According to CU360, veterans often face challenges that extend beyond housing alone. Many struggle with navigating benefits, finding employment, accessing healthcare, overcoming isolation, or simply determining where to turn next after returning home.

Community Unity 360 reports that more than twenty veterans have already received assistance through the program. Some have secured employment opportunities, others have found permanent housing, and several continue to remain connected to the organization long after their immediate needs have been addressed.

The historic school itself adds another layer of significance to the project. Originally constructed during the New Deal era in the late 1930s, the building has long been recognized by generations of local residents. The property was later owned by veteran J.W. Hooper, whose connection to the school helped preserve the structure after its closure.

Today, volunteers, donors, local businesses, and community members are working together to restore the aging facility while preserving its history. Although significant progress has already been made, much work remains. Construction materials, supplies, volunteer labor, and financial contributions are all needed to help bring the vision to completion.

That is where this year’s May Day Music Fest comes in.

Festival organizers selected Community Unity 360 because of its direct impact on local veterans and its commitment to creating lasting change within the community. Funds raised through the event, along with associated fundraising activities such as the inaugural Veterans Walk, will help support ongoing restoration efforts and future programming at the sanctuary.

The partnership represents a natural fit. Just as independent musicians rely on community support to pursue their dreams, Community Unity 360 relies on the generosity of local residents, businesses, and organizations to continue building a place where veterans can find hope, dignity, and belonging.

On July 5, music fans attending the 6th Annual May Day Music Fest at Spring Park in Tuscumbia will have the opportunity to enjoy a full day of live performances while also contributing to a cause that reaches far beyond the stage.

Every donation, sponsorship, volunteer effort, and act of support helps move Community Unity 360 one step closer to its goal of creating a permanent sanctuary where veterans can find assistance, friendship, and a renewed sense of purpose.

For those who would like to learn more about Community Unity 360 or contribute to the project, additional information and donation opportunities are available through Community Unity 360’s official website at communityunity360.org.

This year, the music is bringing people together for more than entertainment. It is helping build a future where no veteran has to face life's challenges alone.
