The sounds of handcrafted instruments once again filled Huntsville, Alabama, as musicians, builders, and music fans gathered for the 22nd Annual Cigar Box Guitar Festival. Held across multiple venues including Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment and the Orion Amphitheater, the festival continued its tradition as the world's longest-running celebration of cigar box guitars and the unique musical culture surrounding them.

This year's festival carried special significance as it honored the memory of beloved North Alabama blues musician and educator Microwave Dave Gallaher, who passed away earlier this year. Known throughout the region for his passion for music education and mentorship, Gallaher's influence could be felt throughout the weekend as performers and attendees celebrated both his musical legacy and his lifelong commitment to inspiring future generations of musicians.  More information on  how you can donate to The Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation (a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization) can be found on the official site at https://microwavedavemef.org/.

What began more than two decades ago as a grassroots gathering has grown into one of Huntsville's most distinctive music traditions. The festival showcased live performances, instrument demonstrations, workshops, and opportunities for visitors to experience the artistry behind cigar box guitar building. From blues and folk to roots music and beyond, the event highlighted the creativity that emerges when musicians turn simple materials into expressive instruments.

Beyond the music, the festival continued its commitment to supporting arts education and community outreach. Proceeds benefited the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation, which works to bring music-based learning opportunities into classrooms throughout North Alabama. Additional fundraising efforts also supported Huntsville Hospital's Music Therapy Program, helping expand access to the healing power of music for patients and families across the region.

The weekend concluded with a benefit concert featuring Grammy-winning musician Gary Nichols backed by the legendary FAME Gang of Muscle Shoals, providing a fitting finale to a festival that has become deeply woven into Huntsville's artistic identity.

For another year, the Cigar Box Guitar Festival proved that great music doesn't require expensive instruments—just creativity, passion, and a community willing to keep the spirit of handmade music alive. As the final notes faded across the Rocket City, attendees left with a renewed appreciation for the musicians, builders, and educators who continue to make this uniquely American tradition thrive.
